Getting the size right first time saves you a trip to the post office. Here's what we stock, how each piece is cut, and the one measurement that settles it.
The quickest way to get it right
Don't go by the label on your last jacket — labels wander between brands. Go by the garment.
- Find a jacket or hoodie you already own that fits the way you'd want this one to fit.
- Lay it flat on a table, do up the zip, and smooth out the creases.
- Measure straight across the chest, from armhole to armhole, then double it. That's the garment's chest measurement.
- Match that figure against our supplier's chart below and take the closest size.
Comparing garment to garment like this is far more reliable than measuring your own chest, because it accounts for how much room you actually like having.
Irish Farmers Journal softshell jacket
Stocked in XS, S, M, L, XL, XXL and XXXL.
This one is cut to go over something. It has a warm backing and a three-layer membrane, and it's sized on the assumption there'll be a fleece or a jumper underneath on a cold morning. If you'll mostly wear it over a shirt and you're between sizes, take the smaller of the two. If it's going over a fleece, stay where you are or size up.
The body is a regular fit rather than a tailored one, the hem sits on the hip, and the sleeves are cut long enough to stay put when you reach.
Irish Farmers Journal softshell sleeveless
Stocked in XS, S, M, L, XL, 2XL and 3XL.
Same fabric and same cut through the body as the jacket, so if you know your size in one you know it in the other. Because it's designed to be worn over a jumper or a fleece more often than not, most people take the same size they'd take in the jacket rather than sizing down.
It has two zipped hand pockets, an upper pocket, and an elasticated hem with cord stoppers, so there's some adjustment at the waist.
Irish Farmers Journal hoodie
Stocked in Extra Small, Small, Medium, Large, Extra Large and 2XL.
A classic pullover hoodie in navy, cut roomy in the body with a dual front pocket. It's a relaxed fit by design — if you like a hoodie close to the body, take your usual size; if you like room to layer a shirt underneath, go one up.
Whatever size you land on, washing it inside out on a cool wash is the best way to keep the chest print sharp.
Hats, caps and bags
The baseball cap, bucket hat and bobble hat are all one size, with an adjustable strap or a ribbed band. The drawstring bag is one size.

If the size is wrong when it arrives
Send it back unworn, with the labels still on and in its original packaging, using the returns docket that came in the parcel. Note on the docket which size you'd like instead and email us so we can hold it for you. Return postage is at your own expense, and we'd recommend a tracked service.
